The Kano State House of Assembly has granted Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s plea to secure a N4 billion loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the finalization of the Tiga and Challawa Hydro-electric power project,leadership report.

This endorsement came after the Leader of the House, Lawan Hussaini (NNPP- Dala), introduced a motion during the session.

Hussaini emphasized that the loan carries a single-digit interest rate and poses no harm to the state’s economy. He further explained that the completed project would play a vital role in revitalizing struggling industries within the state.

The Tiga Independent Power Plant project was initially launched during the tenure of former Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso, with the goal of generating 35MW of power using Challawa and Tiga dams. The project has been continued by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje since he assumed office in 2015.

Governor Kabir-Yusuf forwarded a formal request to the House, which was presented by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore during the session. In his request, the governor highlighted that the loan’s purpose is to conclude the project, ultimately boosting the state’s economy by reviving industries, facilitating irrigation farming, and providing power for street lighting in the city.
