Barrister Samuel Agbeluyi, President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), has advocated for the exemption of women from tax obligations during their maternity leave,Daily Trust reports.

Agbeluyi made this plea during the Maiden Tax Summit organized by the Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT) in Abuja, themed ‘Beyond Numbers: Unveiling the Gender Dynamics of Taxation for Inclusive Economic Growth’.

Highlighting the unique role women play in childbirth, Agbeluyi proposed the suspension of tax deductions for women on maternity leave as a recognition of their significant responsibility. He emphasized that this exemption would support women without adversely affecting the tax system.

Dr. Titilayo Enitan Fowokan, a speaker and Council Member of CITN, underscored the importance of a gender-inclusive tax system for Nigeria’s sustainable development during the summit.

Mrs. Bosede Ikhanoba, National President of SWIT, reiterated the summit’s objective of promoting gender inclusivity and responsiveness, ensuring equitable treatment for women in taxation matters.
