Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State, has criticized Northern governors for their recent trip to the United States. The governors had attended a peace summit organized by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP),Daily Trust reports.
In a Facebook post, Lamido highlighted the governors’ lack of understanding of the country’s constitution, particularly regarding security matters, which fall under the purview of the federal government.
He emphasized that security is a federal responsibility, as outlined in the constitution, and questioned the governors’ decision to engage in discussions on security issues during their US trip. Lamido pointed out pressing local issues, such as lack of basic amenities and poverty-induced challenges, which he believes should have been their focus instead.
He criticized the governors for wasting resources on the trip and suggested that they could have obtained valuable insights on security from domestic institutions like the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) or the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).
Lamido concluded by expressing disappointment in the governors’ priorities and their failure to address the real issues affecting their states.
