The Kano State Government has unveiled that it allocates an approximate sum of N1.2 billion every month to facilitate the provision of clean water in the Kano metropolis,leadership reports.
Ali Makoda, the state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, disclosed this during a media briefing in Kano on Wednesday. He detailed that the expenditure encompasses N400 million for diesel, N387 million for chemicals, N280 million for electricity bills, and other associated costs.
Makoda assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the prevailing water scarcity issue in the state capital and its surroundings. He attributed the water shortage to outdated equipment, particularly at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, which serves as the primary water source for much of Kano metropolis. Additionally, he noted the impact of high temperatures, leading to increased water consumption to cope with the weather.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the previous administration’s neglect of the water sector, Makoda claimed that only 20% of the state’s water demand was met during that time. He asserted that the current administration has significantly improved water supply, meeting over 60% of the population’s water needs.
To address long-term water supply challenges, Makoda revealed the state government’s collaboration with the French government to invest 63.4 million Euros in constructing the third Kano Water Treatment Plant. He emphasized Governor Abba Yusuf’s commitment to ensuring adequate drinking water in Kano, highlighting the allocation of substantial financial resources towards this objective.
