Nyesom Wike, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was one of the 45 ministerial nominees who were screened and confirmed by the Senate.
Before his appointment, there were efforts by some members of the PDP to suspend Wike due to his association with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his acceptance of the ministerial offer.
However, Wike clarified that he had written to leaders of his party, including Iliya Damagum, the acting chairman of the PDP, and obtained their approval to join Tinubu’s cabinet.
The PDP had been entangled in a prolonged internal crisis that had divided the party.
The crisis within the opposition party escalated in June of the previous year after Wike lost the PDP presidential nomination to Atiku Abubakar.
