The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced the initiation of the local government election process,Daily Trust reports.
This announcement was made in a public notice signed by the RSIEC Chairman/Chief Electoral Commissioner, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), and distributed to journalists on Wednesday night.
This development follows closely after Governor Siminalayi Fubara appointed caretaker committee chairmen, replacing local government chairmen who were loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Fubara emphasized that the caretaker committee’s tenure would be brief as local government elections were imminent.

Fubara stated, “Let me also make it clear that your tenures will not be long because, as a matter of fact, the process for the commencement of elective local government chairmen will begin before the end of today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday).”
In the public notice, Enebeli called on all political parties and stakeholders to attend a meeting scheduled for next month.
The Chairman of the Commission announced that the meeting will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the RSIEC Headquarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt.
During this meeting, the commission will unveil the timetable and guidelines for the 2024 Local Government Elections in the State.
Enebeli invited leaders of all registered political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, religious organizations, and the media to attend.
The notice reads, “The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli, hereby invites leaders of all registered political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, religious organizations, the media, professional organizations, civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, community-based groups, and the electorate to a general stakeholders meeting on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the RSIEC Headquarters, 239-243 Aba Road, Port Harcourt, at 10:00 AM prompt.
“The highlight of the meeting will be the unveiling of the timetable and guidelines for the 2024 Local Government Elections in the State. All concerned should be seated at the RSIEC Auditorium by 09:45 AM, please.”
