Enugu State Police Command reported a successful raid on the criminal hideouts of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the Akwuke area of Enugu metropolis,Daily Trust reports.

During the operation conducted around 2:30 am on Saturday, police encountered resistance from the renegades who opened fire upon their arrival. However, the police overpowered them with superior firepower, resulting in the neutralization of two renegades.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command’s spokesperson, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that despite some members escaping with gunshot wounds, significant weapons and ammunition were seized. These included an AK-47 rifle, a Sub-Machine Gun (SMG), a stainless Pump-Action Gun (PAG), along with live and expended rounds of 7.62 mm calibre ammunition. Additionally, five live cartridges and a small blue-colored Gideon New Testament Bible, possibly concealing charms, were recovered.

Ndukwe attributed the success of the raid to the proactive crime prevention strategies implemented by Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu. He noted that preliminary investigations indicated that the breech number of the recovered AK-47 was erased, suggesting the involvement of the criminals in multiple attacks, including the theft of police officers’ rifles.

The police spokesperson emphasized that further discreet investigations were underway to apprehend other suspects and unravel additional details regarding the criminal activities of the IPOB/ESN group.
