Prof. Bem Angwe, the gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the 2023 general election in Benue State and former national legal adviser of the party, has officially withdrawn his membership from the party.

This decision comes just ahead of the scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for this week, specifically on Tuesday. Concurrently, another faction within the party is preparing to hold their own NEC meeting today in Lagos.

The NNPP has been embroiled in a crisis that led to the suspension of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Dr. Boniface Aneibonam, and the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Agbo Major. Dr. Major has characterized his suspension, along with that of the BoT chairman, as a theatrical spectacle.

In a letter addressed to the ward chairman of Mbatyu NNPP in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, Angwe cited several reasons for his departure from the party. He mentioned the crisis and confusion gripping the party, as well as the blatant disregard by certain individuals within the party for the established rules and regulations outlined in the party’s constitution governing its affairs.

Angwe stated, “Considering the current developments in the Party are neither conducive nor healthy for my continued membership and stay in the Party” and expressed his desire to resume his professional academic pursuits and focus on the protection and advancement of human rights in Nigeria. He emphasized his commitment to building a stronger and better Nigeria based on the principles of freedom, equality, and justice.

He also mentioned the resolution of elders and stakeholders in his community in Benue State, who advised him to withdraw his membership from the party, in compliance with the NNPP Constitution 2022 (as amended). He officially withdrew his NNPP membership on August 26, 2023.

Angwe expressed his gratitude to party members, supporters, and well-wishers throughout Benue State and Nigeria for their unwavering support during his time in the party and his gubernatorial campaign. He assured them of his commitment to keeping them informed about his future endeavors.

In conclusion, he urged his supporters and well-wishers to remain patient and steadfast while awaiting updates on his next steps.
