Mr. Onyebuchi Anene, a resident of Kubwa in Bwari Local Council, Abuja, was fatally shot by a police officer,Daily Trust reports.

The incident occurred on Wednesday during an argument between Mr. Anene and the officer.

Witnesses reported that the altercation began after Mr. Anene was involved in a minor accident with a motorcycle (okada) rider.

After settling the matter with the okada rider and his passenger, Mr. Anene was about to enter the nearby estate where he lived when police officers arrived at the scene. They instructed him to follow them to their station, but he refused, stating that the issue had already been resolved and the okada rider and his passenger had left.

During the ensuing argument, a police officer reportedly shot Mr. Anene at close range. He was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital and later referred to National Hospital, Abuja, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

In a statement, SP Adeh Josephine, the command spokeswoman, confirmed the incident. She said FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, had directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to immediately conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Anene’s death.

According to her, Mr. Anene was killed by an accidental discharge from the police officer’s weapon on Wednesday, May 22, around 9:45 PM in Byazhin, Kubwa, a satellite town in Abuja.

She added that the officer responsible for the accidental discharge is in custody. The CP extended heartfelt condolences to Mr. Anene’s family and the public, condemning the officer’s unprofessional and distressing conduct. He assured the family and the public that justice would be served promptly.
