Five of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday night have escaped from their captors.

The corps members were abducted along the Rumuji area of the East West Road in Emohua Local Council of Rivers State.

The Guardian gathered that they left the Ondo State NYSC camp after their passing out parade, and were on their way to Port Harcourt when they were abducted by yet to be identified gunmen.

It was also learnt that five of the abducted victims, who escaped have been moved to Choba police station near the area for safety.

An eyewitness, whose sister-in-law was abducted, confirmed that the incident happened at about 9:00p.m.

The eyewitness said: “My sister-in-law was among the victims, they left Ondo NYSC camp and were on their way to Port Harcourt. When I called and asked her where they were, she told me that they would be at Choba Park in 20 minutes. When the time elapsed, I called back to know why they have not arrived, she whispered that kidnappers took them. I called later, but the phone was busy.”

“In the morning, I went to Choba police station and showed them her picture and they said, five of the victims escaped and they narrated that the bus arrived at the camp and picked them all immediately after they passed out.”

He however, urged security agencies and the state government to ensure safe and speedy release of the remaining victims.

When contacted, spokesperson for Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident.

She said some of the affected corps members have been rescued, assuring that efforts were on to rescue the remaining ones.
