The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has urged the federal government to retract the recent tariff increase, citing its potential to escalate the cost of goods and adversely affect the economically disadvantaged,Daily Trust reports.
This call comes following the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) decision on April 3 to raise electricity tariffs for customers in the “Band A” category, who receive 20 hours of daily power supply.
Under the new tariff, these customers now pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant jump from the previous N66.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Power, NUEE criticized the hike as unjustifiable in a nation already grappling with soaring prices of essential commodities and services. The union, represented by acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike, expressed concern that the increase could drive consumers towards foreign products due to the unaffordability of local alternatives.
Furthermore, NUEE warned that such a hike could lead to the closure of businesses unable to cope with decreased patronage. The union also highlighted the safety risks faced by its members during disconnection visits, emphasizing the lack of consultation with stakeholders prior to the decision.
NUEE emphasized that the majority of Nigerians, struggling with basic needs and facing an electricity access rate of about 55%, would bear the brunt of the tariff hike. The union questioned the rationale behind targeting only Band A consumers, arguing that the additional costs would ultimately trickle down to the general populace.
In addition, NUEE criticized the lack of consultation with stakeholders and the absence of a clear energy policy from the current administration. The union asserted that the tariff increase is not in the best interest of Nigerians and should be reversed.
Meanwhile, electricity generation in the country has plummeted to 2,775 megawatts, marking a 32.3% decline from the previous week. Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator revealed a significant reduction in load allocation to distribution companies, further exacerbating the challenges faced in the power sector.
