During Thursday’s plenary session, the House of Representatives progressed a Bill to establish the Federal University Teaching Hospital Erawhe-Owhe, Delta State, through its second reading,leadership reports.
This proposed legislation, spearheaded by Hon. Ajirioghene Jonathan Ukodhiko, representing Isoko North/South Federal Constituency of Delta State, aims to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards, etc.) Act 1985. The goal is to enhance its efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with the needs of the people. Additionally, it aims to improve access to quality healthcare facilities and generate employment opportunities.

In presenting the Bill’s general principles, Ukodhiko emphasized the importance of good health, citing it as the ultimate form of wealth. He highlighted the right to healthcare access, as recognized by international agreements such as the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which Nigeria has ratified.
The lawmaker underscored the necessity of establishing healthcare facilities to ensure citizens receive adequate medical care. He lamented the lack of such infrastructure in his constituency, despite its significant contributions to the nation’s GDP.
Ukodhiko stressed that the establishment of the Teaching Hospital in Erawha-Owhe, Delta State, would provide essential medical services, education, and employment opportunities. He argued that this initiative would reduce medical referrals, decrease healthcare costs, and save lives.
Furthermore, Ukodhiko emphasized the potential of the Bill to address brain drain in the medical sector and reduce medical tourism, thereby fostering economic and medical growth within Nigeria.
Members of the House expressed overwhelming support for the Bill, which was approved for a second reading. It was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Health Institutions for further legislative consideration.
