The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has made an appeal to the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabiru Yusuf, seeking intervention to avert a crisis at Yusuf Maitama Sule University,leadership report.
In a statement released and signed by ASUU’s chairperson, Surajo Sulaiman, the union outlined three key issues central to their concerns. These include the enhancement of the members’ working conditions, the rejuvenation and hastening of the university’s development through sustainable funding, and the preservation of university autonomy and academic freedom.
ASUU stated that it is actively engaging with the media and the public to shed light on the imminent crisis and the adverse conditions the university is facing due to governmental neglect. The union expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address their demands, despite several submissions and the denial of a request for an audience.

Sulaiman emphasized the urgent need for the reconstitution of the University Governing Council, stressing its legal importance and how its absence undermines the university administration.
Regarding the condition of service, ASUU demanded the immediate settlement of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) balances and Consequential Adjustment arrears. They also called for the prompt implementation of the newly approved Consolidated Universities Academic Salary Structure II award, effective from January 1, 2023, along with the payment of arrears and the N35,000 provisional wage award sanctioned by the federal government.
On the issue of university funding, the union urged the government to expedite the completion of ongoing projects, supplement TETFund funding for academic staff training, and consider discontinuing the automatic deduction of 25 percent from the University Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). ASUU highlighted funding challenges faced by the university since its inception and implored the Visitor to improve funding.
In conclusion, ASUU YUMSUK appealed to the Visitor to the University to intensify efforts for the resolution of the brewing issues in the interest of industrial harmony.
