The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for a revision of the administrative guidelines pertaining to Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to enhance effective governance for societal progress,leadership report.
During a plenary session on Thursday, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, the chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Community Relations, brought this matter to the forefront. Okanlawon underscored the necessity of updating the laws governing local governments and LCDAs to bring them in line with current realities.
He voiced his concerns about the improper bestowal of chieftaincy titles without appropriate regulations and implored his colleagues to support the review of these administrative guidelines to foster good governance. Additionally, the legislator recommended the proper regulation of the number of supervisors and special advisers within local government councils.

This call received backing from the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who emphasized that it is the Assembly’s responsibility to establish and amend laws as required.
During the same session, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) drew attention to the haphazard way in which streets are named in Lagos. He pointed out that historically, streets were named after individuals who had contributed to the development of their communities or the state and suggested that this practice should be reevaluated.
Hon. Olusegun Ege (Ojo 1) proposed that the House address the issue of certain estates in the state that lock their gates, leading to traffic congestion and other complications.
In his contribution, Majority Leader Hon. Noheem Adams shared an incident from a recent oversight function on healthcare in the state, where they were denied entry into some estates. He noted that these estates also had ongoing legal disputes related to elections held within their premises and had not been granting access to government officials.
Some of the lawmakers recommended that the House revisit the laws governing residents’ associations, as they are currently guided by Community Development Association (CDA) laws.
