The Plateau State Police command recently convened a meeting with religious and community leaders in a concerted effort to find enduring solutions to the ongoing conflicts between farming communities and pastoralists,Daily Trust reports.
Our correspondent has noted that this gathering represents one of several initiatives undertaken by concerned stakeholders to restore peace among the feuding factions within the state. The region has witnessed the loss of hundreds of lives in various crises.
During the weekend gathering at the police officers’ mess, the State Commissioner of Police, Okoro Julius, underscored the purpose of the meeting: to mend the longstanding strained relations between farmers and herders in the state. He earnestly appealed to all parties involved to lay down their weapons and instead embrace cooperation.

Addressing the assembly, Nura Abdullahi, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), lauded the Nigeria Police Force for organizing this meeting of stakeholders. He expressed confidence that a focus on security and purpose could pave the way for lasting peace. He noted the unique quality of the gathering, as participants actively contributed suggestions to foster unity between farmers and herders.
Reverend Polycarp Lubo, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), emphasized the timeliness of the exercise, given the prevalent insecurity afflicting the state. He commended the governor for his efforts in reestablishing peace following attacks and violence in various villages. The primary focus of this meeting, he emphasized, is on fostering genuine reconciliation and peaceful coexistence, encouraging people to forgive one another and relate in a harmonious manner.
