The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi State, has declared an indefinite strike, citing the absence of pension and retirement schemes, poor working conditions, and unpaid earned academic allowances, leadership reports.

The announcement was made by the ASUU branch chairperson, Comrade Auwal Nuhu, during a press conference held on Friday following a congress at the university’s Yuli campus.

Comrade Nuhu stated that the strike would commence immediately at 12:00 pm on Friday, November 29, 2024. “The Congress noted the lack of readiness and commitment of the university administration and the government to address its demands,” he said.

He explained that all efforts to engage the authorities through dialogue and other mechanisms had been unsuccessful. “Consequently, the Congress resolved for the branch to embark on a comprehensive and indefinite strike until further notice,” he added.

Describing the situation as “unbearable,” Nuhu accused the university management and the Bauchi State government of neglecting longstanding grievances despite repeated appeals.

“We can no longer endure these conditions. Our members are demoralized and lack financial security even after decades of service. This strike is our last resort following exhaustive discussions and failed negotiations,” Nuhu said.

He emphasized that the strike would only be called off when concrete steps are taken to address the union’s demands.

The indefinite industrial action is expected to severely disrupt academic activities at SAZU, further straining the relationship between staff and the university management.

Students, already contending with a tight academic calendar, now face uncertainty as the strike threatens to delay their academic progress indefinitely.
