The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to mark the anniversary of his first year in office by demonstrating his commitment to democracy, accountability, and government transparency. SERAP specifically urged President Tinubu to publish his asset declaration form immediately,Daily Trust reports,

Additionally, SERAP recommended that he encourage Vice-President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and state governors to also make their asset declaration forms publicly available.

SERAP further suggested that President Tinubu propose a constitutional amendment to create a database for publishing the asset declaration forms of government officials before, during, and after their tenure in public office.

In an open letter dated May 25, 2024, and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization stated, “Publishing your asset declaration form and encouraging your Vice-President, ministers, and state governors to do the same would serve legitimate public interests.”

SERAP emphasized that such actions would promote public trust and establish a system of transparency, accountability, and public participation. The organization highlighted that openness and transparency regarding the asset declarations of high-level public officials would strengthen the country’s democracy and enhance accountability at all government levels.

The letter partially read, “In your inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, you promised to take proactive steps to discourage corruption and to ensure that Nigeria is impartially governed according to the constitution and the rule of law.”
