The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that troops conducting internal operations across the country’s five theatres neutralized 8,034 terrorists, arrested 11,623 suspects, and rescued 6,376 hostages between January and December 2024,leadership reports.

Speaking during the biweekly update on military operations, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, shared that troops also recovered 8,216 weapons, 211,459 rounds of ammunition, and stolen crude oil valued at ₦57,052,218,551 during the period.

The recovered weapons included 4,053 AK-47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, 731 dane guns, and 240 pump-action guns. Ammunition recovered comprised 120,247 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 41,515 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammo, 5,373 cartridges, 1,940 assorted arms, and 25,664 assorted rounds of ammunition.

In the fight against oil theft, troops confiscated 53,101,430 liters of stolen crude oil, 9,179,181 liters of illegally refined AGO (diesel), 90,595 liters of DPK (kerosene), and 156,095 liters of PMS (petrol), among other items.

General Buba assured the public that ongoing operations are maintaining pressure on criminal elements, creating conditions that prevent terrorists from carrying out attacks or endangering citizens.

“The armed forces, through these operations, are increasingly improving security conditions and reducing threats posed by terrorists,” he stated.

He added that the military remains committed to refining its strategies to enhance operational effectiveness and ensure the safety of citizens, emphasizing that progress in the war against insurgency is on an upward trajectory.
