President Bola Tinubu has urged the Senate to confirm Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN),leadership reports.

The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Kekere-Ekun has held the position of Acting CJN since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

In the letter, Tinubu referenced Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the president to appoint the CJN based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) and subject to Senate approval.

“I hereby submit the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria. I trust that the Senate will give this request prompt consideration and approval,” Tinubu stated.

The Senate has since forwarded the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further deliberation on Wednesday.
