Sunday Umeha, a member of the House of Representatives representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency in Enugu State, has officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC),TheCable reports.
Umeha made the announcement on Saturday during a political rally held at Ibagwa-Aka in Igboeze South Local Government Area. He explained that his decision was driven by persistent internal crises within the Labour Party at both the state and national levels.
“I have resigned from the Labour Party and completed my registration with the APC in my ward,” Umeha said. “The division and unresolved conflicts within the LP influenced my decision. Additionally, joining the APC offers the opportunity to connect with the federal centre and attract more development to our people.”
He also revealed that another rally would be held soon in Ezeagu, his local government area, to formally welcome him into the APC.

Umeha claimed to be the first elected federal lawmaker of APC origin in Enugu since the party’s formation in 2014. He credited the APC with delivering key infrastructural projects in the South-East, citing the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and the Second Niger Bridge as examples of its impact in the region—contrasting them with the performance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During the rally, prominent Labour Party figure and businessman Joshua Ogbonna also defected to the APC along with over 1,000 LP members, including local government and ward executives.
Enugu APC Chairman, Ugochukwu Agballah, hailed the mass defection as a turning point for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. He criticized the PDP for what he described as nearly three decades of hardship for Enugu residents, accusing the party of imposing burdensome taxes, destroying livelihoods, and seizing land under the guise of development.
“This marks the collapse of the Labour Party’s structure in Igboeze South,” Agballah declared. “Today, I present you with the symbols of our party — the flag and the broom. With this broom, we will sweep in good governance across Enugu State.
“We are committed to ending 26 years of misrule and restoring true democracy. Let it be known: the APC in Enugu is prepared to take over the reins of government in 2027.”
