Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal action against Nigeria’s governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Mr. Nyesom Wike, for their alleged failure to provide an account of N5.9 trillion and $4.6 billion loans acquired by their states and the FCT. SERAP demands the publication of loan agreements, along with details and locations of projects executed with the borrowed funds,Daily Trust reports.
The lawsuit comes in response to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State’s recent disclosure that the preceding administration of Nasir El-Rufai left behind a debt of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities, rendering it impossible for the state to meet its salary obligations.
In the suit filed as FHC/ABJ/CS/592/2024 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, last Friday, SERAP seeks a court order to compel the governors and Mr. Wike to account for the loans and publish copies of the loan agreements, as well as the locations of projects executed with the loan funds.
