The Senate has formed a committee chaired by the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), to address contentious issues in the tax reform bills and provide a report to the committee of the whole ahead of public hearings on the bills,Daily Trust reports.
Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North) announced the development during Wednesday’s plenary.
Presiding over the session, Barau acknowledged the controversies surrounding the bills and tasked the committee with consulting the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the executive branch, and other key stakeholders to resolve the concerns.
On October 3, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly. His letter was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, during separate plenary sessions in both chambers. Tinubu emphasized that the bills aimed to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and align with his administration’s broader development objectives.

However, the bills have faced opposition from various quarters, including governors, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, some federal lawmakers, and the general public.
Barau also announced additional members of the committee, including Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaha (APC, Kebbi North), among others.
