Rayo Vallecano has signed Colombian midfielder and former Real Madrid star James Rodriguez as a free agent, the club announced on Monday,leadership reports.

The 33-year-old recently played a key role in helping Colombia finish as runners-up in the Copa America this summer, where he was also named the tournament’s best player.

Rodriguez had previously terminated his contract with Brazilian club Sao Paulo before joining Rayo Vallecano, who are marking their 100th anniversary this season.

“Rayo secures their star signing in this most special season, celebrating 100 years of history, bravery, courage, and nobility,” the Spanish club said in a statement.

Rodriguez, who won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup, was subsequently signed by Real Madrid from Monaco. During his time with Los Blancos, he won two La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

After spending two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, Rodriguez left Madrid in 2020 to join Everton. He has since played in Qatar and Greece before moving to Sao Paulo in 2023.
