Tragedy struck in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area in Delta State, on Sunday when a petrol tanker erupted in flames, claiming multiple lives,Daily Trust reports.
The incident occurred near a FirstBank branch along the busy Old Lagos/Asaba Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker burst into flames, igniting widespread panic. The inferno consumed vehicles, houses, and business premises, leaving a trail of destruction and the charred remains of victims at the scene.
Videos circulating online showed desperate attempts by residents to control the fire while awaiting the arrival of firefighters. Speaking to Daily Trust, Mr. Chuks Ogwude, an eyewitness, described the event as devastating. “The fire spread rapidly, and people were helpless. We tried to help, but there was little we could do. Authorities need to act quickly to prevent more tragedies like this,” he said.

Residents criticized the delayed response of emergency services, attributing the frequent accidents to poorly maintained roads and the reckless behavior of tanker drivers.
Mrs. Ebele Chiejine, a local resident, voiced her concerns: “There have been too many accidents on this road because tanker operators are not properly monitored. The government must enforce safety measures to prevent further loss of lives and property.”
As of the time of this report, several buildings and vehicles had been reduced to ashes, with some structures still burning. Meanwhile, personnel from the Delta State Police Command and fire service had arrived to manage the situation.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed profound sorrow over the incident, confirming that four people lost their lives and three others sustained injuries.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described the tragedy as horrifying. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
“With a heavy heart, I sympathize with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families. This tragic event is deeply saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Governor Oborevwori assured the public that necessary support would be provided to those affected. “I have directed relevant agencies to act swiftly in offering assistance to the victims. We will ensure the injured receive proper medical care and that families who lost loved ones are supported through this difficult time,” he added.
He also commended the efforts of the Delta State Fire Service, local residents, and security agencies in responding promptly to the disaster.
“I am grateful for the quick actions of our fire service, security teams, and the residents of Ika South who stepped up to help. Their courage and selflessness in the face of such a tragedy are deeply appreciated,” the governor said.
