Ambassador Sylvester Okafor, President General of the United Nations Association of Africa (UNAA), has raised serious concerns over the rise of terror groups in Nigeria, especially a newly emerging faction in Sokoto State, amid escalating violence across other regions, including the South-East,leadership reports.

In a press statement released from the United States and signed by Okafor himself, shared by the association’s Director of Communications, Amb. Nwokoma Messiah, in Abuja on Tuesday, Okafor emphasized that the worsening insecurity threatens not only citizens’ safety but also Nigeria’s progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A new terror group, known as ‘Lakurawa,’ has been terrorizing communities in Sokoto and Kebbi States, targeting civilians, destroying property, and obstructing farmers from accessing their lands.

“The rise of these terror groups is deeply troubling for all Nigerians. It is essential for the federal government to reassess its security strategies and deploy adequate resources to contain this growing crisis,” Okafor stated.

He added, “Insecurity impedes development, and if left unchecked, it will undo our achievements in both national and international commitments.” Okafor urged the government to boost cooperation with international allies and to invest in community-based programs that foster peace and security.

These developments prompted Okafor to call on the federal government to take immediate, decisive action to address the security challenges. He warned that the current instability threatens progress in economic stability, education, health, and peace—key areas of the SDGs.

Okafor also highlighted the need to engage local leaders and communities directly in counter-terrorism efforts, stressing that sustainable solutions require the active participation of those most impacted by the violence.

He assured that the UNAA stands ready to support the Nigerian government and civil society in restoring peace and stability, creating a conducive environment for development and the attainment of the SDGs.
