The Kano State Government has voiced strong opposition to the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly,Daily Trust reports.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, made the government’s stance clear during the 2025 celebration at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre. The declaration was detailed in a statement released by the deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu.
“The tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges,” Governor Yusuf stated. “Kano State stands firmly against any policy that undermines the welfare of our people.” He praised the resilience of Kano residents in the face of economic difficulties and criticized the proposed tax hike as “ill-timed, lopsided, and detrimental to national unity.”

He further emphasized the pressing issues facing the country, particularly in the north, saying, “Nigerians, especially in the north, are grappling with hyperinflation and unprecedented insecurity. The presidency should prioritize addressing extreme poverty and hunger, particularly in this region.”
Governor Yusuf also highlighted his administration’s achievements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs. He reminded residents of the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024, which affirmed him as the duly elected governor of Kano State.
The statement also celebrated the 2024 reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, which Deputy Governor Gwarzo described as a victory for the people’s will. He reiterated that the authority to appoint an Emir rests solely with the Kano State Governor and called on those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law and maintain peace.
Encouraging unity and progress, the deputy governor urged residents to look ahead with optimism: “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
