Ahead of the 2023 general election, the Chairman, Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service, Haruna Ibrahim, has urged Nigerian professionals to encourage political leaders to file their returns and pay their taxes, Punch Metro reports.

He made this known in Abuja during a three-day mandatory continuing professional development programme of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, FCT branch, with the induction of 421, with the theme, ‘Understanding Financial Disclosures on Sustainability’.

Mr Ibrahim said, “There has been a campaign about Permanent Voter Cards, but it’s also important for us as professionals to start a campaign on tax clearance.

“With the PVCs, you vote, but with the tax clearance, you have more powers to interrogate political leaders, and this will encourage our political leaders to pay their taxes and file their returns.”

Also, the National President, ANAN, Prof Benjamin Osisioma, noted that there was a need to invest and manage resources for the sake of posterity.

Prof Osisioma said, “We seem to be consuming our present and our future. If we continue at the rate we’re going, our children may not meet anything.

“We must ensure that future generations inherit something substantial. We need to ensure that we’re doing the best we can to produce the best for our children and our children’s children.”

He further urged members to guard the name of the association with professional and ethical conduct.
