The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that armed men attacked its construction site at Obajana, Kogi State,Daily Trust reports.

In a statement, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the 330/132/33kV transmission substation came under attack Tuesday night. According to security personnel on site, the attackers fired indiscriminately, forcing the guards to flee.

“During the assault, a 150MVA 330/132/33kV power transformer, already installed on its plinth, was damaged, with a burst radiator,” Mbah noted. TCN is currently assessing the damage in coordination with the contractor overseeing the project.

Mbah highlighted that this incident adds to a troubling trend of vandalism targeting transmission infrastructure nationwide. The new Obajana Transmission Substation, designed with a 1X150MVA 330/132/33kV capacity, aims to significantly improve power supply in Kogi State and surrounding areas upon completion.

According to Daily Trust, incidents of vandalism and destruction of electricity infrastructure have risen across the country. In 2024 alone, over 20 transmission towers have been vandalized, the most recent being the 330kV Lokoja-Gwagwalada transmission line 1, on Saturday.
