The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged Nigerians to adopt bicycles as a means of transportation, leadership reports.

This appeal came during a roadshow held on major streets in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. Additionally, the FRSC organized an awareness program for students and pupils of a private school in Port Harcourt to celebrate World Cycling Day 2024.

Following the roadshow, FRSC Sector Commander in Rivers State, Christopher Kuje, emphasized that World Cycling Day, designated by the United Nations (UN), highlights the significance of bicycles.

Kuje pointed out that bicycles are an affordable transportation option for both the wealthy and the poor, and they help reduce road congestion.

He said, “Today is the United Nations’ World Cycling Day, a day set aside to recognize the importance of bicycles. We appreciate the Rivers State Cycling Association for their support. Despite the labor strike, we have successfully conducted this event.

“We started at Silver-Vallee Primary and Secondary School, educating the students on the benefits of cycling. Then, we held a roadshow ending at Wave FM.

“Why celebrate bicycles? Bicycles have unique and significant benefits. Firstly, they are affordable for everyone. This is why some European countries promote cycling. With bicycles, road traffic accidents can decrease by 70 to 80 percent. Additionally, bicycles help eliminate road obstructions.”
