Salihu Mohammed Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has warned that if opposition parties fail to unseat the APC in the 2027 elections, it could have dire consequences for the country,Daily Trust reports.
In a statement titled “Looming Danger of Docile Political Opposition,” Lukman, who also served as the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), criticized the main opposition parties for being mired in internal conflicts as the 2027 elections approach.
Lukman expressed concern that the parties discussing a merger have not yet progressed to meaningful political engagement on any established opposition platforms.
He noted that leaders of some opposition parties have suggested plans to unite to challenge the APC-led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, citing issues such as widespread killings, kidnappings, hunger, poverty, and general insecurity in the country.

Lukman remarked, “It is alarming, for example, that PDP leaders are hostile to Alh. Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi is caught in a leadership struggle within the Labour Party, and Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is presiding over a disoriented NNPP, whose own leaders are causing internal strife.”
He also criticized other parties, including the SDP and PRP, for adopting a “monarchic” approach, waiting passively in their comfort zones for disgruntled opposition leaders to approach them for support.
Lukman argued that these issues have emboldened President Tinubu and the APC to make “insensitive and reckless decisions” that further worsen the living conditions of citizens.
He warned that if no structured political engagement begins by the end of December 2024, with the aim of developing an alternative political platform based on the selfless leadership of opposition figures, any opposition to the APC in 2027 would be driven by personal ambitions.
Lukman concluded by cautioning that if this scenario unfolds, the risk of producing a government worse than the current one would be high, regardless of whether it is led by Alh. Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, or any other political leader.
