No fewer than eight persons have died in an auto crash on Eleme/Oyigbo Road, near Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Punch Metro reports.
The Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps, Rivers State, Chukwuma Mbaegbu, said the crash, which happened around 10am on Sunday, involved a bus conveying 10 passengers from Oyigbo in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state.
Mbaegbu said the driver lost control as the vehicle collided with a stationary truck.He said, “The vehicle took off from Oyigbo and was coming inside town.
Along the line, where they call Sand Shore Junction, the bus lost control, veered off the road and collided with a truck parked by the roadside. That resulted in casualties. Only two persons survived out of the 10 occupants of the bus.
“Of course, the bodies were taken to a morgue, while the two injured persons were taken to a hospital. The police have taken over investigations.”
Asked the cause of the accident, the FRSC officer said it might be mechanical deficiency, drunkenness or speeding.
While describing the incident as unfortunate, Mbaegbu advised motorists to maintain their vehicles and check their speed limit constantly.
