A suspected internet fraudster accused of killing an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during an arrest operation in Anambra has been detained, TheCable reports.

According to a source within the anti-graft agency, the suspect allegedly opened fire on EFCC operatives during the operation on Friday, resulting in the death of one officer and serious injury to another.

The deceased officer was buried in Sokoto on Saturday. The suspect is currently being held at the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu.

“This incident is deeply unfortunate and highlights the increasing dangers posed by internet fraud,” the source said. “The officer who lost his life has been buried, and the suspect is now in our custody.”

Attempts by TheCable to obtain a comment from Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, were unsuccessful, as calls to his mobile phone went unanswered despite messages being delivered to his WhatsApp.

Police Confirm Attack on EFCC Operatives

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, confirmed the attack on EFCC operatives. He stated that one officer was killed and another seriously injured during the incident.

Ikenga revealed that the police responded to a distress call on Friday at No. 1 Ekwutife Close, Ifite, where they arrested a suspect and recovered a pump-action gun.

“On 17/1/2025, police operatives in Anambra responded to a distress call and arrested a suspect in connection with the attack on EFCC operatives conducting investigative activities. The incident led to the death of one operative and serious injury to another,” Ikenga said.

He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further updates will be shared in due course.
