The Kogi State High Court in Lokoja has directed Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to appear before it on May 13, 2024. This summons follows allegations of Olukoyede disobeying a court order. The court is investigating a contempt charge against him for actions taken by the EFCC despite a previous court order restraining them, leadership reports.

Justice I. A. Jamil, in a ruling on Suit No: HCL/68M/2024 and Motion No: HCL/190M/2024, stated that the EFCC’s actions violated a valid and subsisting court order, constituting contempt of court. Previously, EFCC operatives attempted to arrest the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, despite a court order prohibiting such actions.

The court’s decision stems from a motion filed by Yahaya Bello seeking to hold Olukoyede in contempt. After reviewing the arguments and evidence, Justice Jamil granted Bello’s request, ordering Olukoyede to appear in court to address the contempt charge.

In delivering the order on April 25, 2024, Justice Jamil outlined the actions taken by the EFCC in violation of the court order and granted the prayers sought by Bello. Consequently, the court directed the issuance and service of a Form 49 Notice to Olukoyede, summoning him to appear before the court on May 13, 2024, to respond to the contempt charge.
