The Bauchi State Police Command has suspended the 2024 annual Zaar Festival, originally scheduled for Saturday, November 2, 2024, in compliance with a court order,leadership reports.

In a statement issued Thursday in Bauchi, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Ahmed Wakil announced that the suspension follows a restraining order from a High Court on October 30, 2024.

The statement reads, “In light of the High Court’s decision, the Bauchi State Police Command informs the public that the 2024 Zaar Festival, initially planned for November 2, 2024, has been suspended due to a court restraining order issued on October 30, 2024.”

SP Wakil noted that past Zaar Festivals have been linked to incidents of violence, including personal attacks, property damage, and disruptions to public order.

“As a result, the festival’s organizers and any individuals involved are prohibited from conducting related processions in Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Local Government Areas, or elsewhere, until a final court decision is made,” Wakil stated.

He emphasized the Police Command’s respect for the cultural importance of such events and its commitment to supporting celebrations that uphold public safety. “We are working closely with stakeholders to identify alternative ways to celebrate these traditions constructively,” he added.

The statement stressed the importance of following the court order to maintain community peace. It also urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to guide young people toward constructive activities and to avoid actions that may incite unrest.

Additionally, SP Wakil noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Mohammed, has announced proactive measures to ensure community safety and harmony across the state.
