The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ilorin, Kwara State, Anselm Lawani, has urged Nigerian leaders to deliver the promised benefits of democracy to the people,leadership reports.
Speaking at a news conference to mark the 2024 Democracy Day, Bishop Lawani highlighted that Nigerians are struggling with high inflation and rising living costs. He pointed out that a significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line despite the country’s abundant human and natural resources.
“When a nation’s resources are well managed, and the people are skillfully governed, citizens enjoy better social wellbeing. This is a key reason for holding this Democracy Day press conference,” he emphasized.

Addressing the issue of minimum wage, the Bishop called on the federal government to pay Nigerian workers a fair living wage. He also suggested introducing tax holidays, zero tariff regimes, or financial support for entrepreneurs to foster sustainable productivity in the country.
Regarding insecurity, the cleric stressed the need for improved intelligence gathering and surveillance to effectively tackle the issue.
