The organized labor unions, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have suspended the nationwide strike for one week,Daily Trust reports.
This decision followed a joint extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held by the unions on Tuesday morning.
After the strike had led to the closure of banks, schools, and government offices, the Federal Government invited labor leaders to a meeting at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
By the end of the meeting on Monday night, the federal government and the labor unions had reached an agreement on a new minimum wage that will be “above N60,000.”

The statement from the meeting included the following points: “Following negotiations by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and the subsequent withdrawal of labor from the negotiation, the Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on June 2, 2024. The Organized Labor declared a nationwide strike on Monday, June 3, 2024, to press their demands.
“In the national interest, the Federal Government convened a meeting with labor representatives at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on June 3, aiming to resolve the strike action.
“After thorough deliberations and engagement by both parties, the following resolutions were reached:
“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, is committed to a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000;
“As a result, the Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the next week to finalize an agreeable National Minimum Wage;
“In recognition of the President’s commitment, the labor unions will immediately convene a meeting to consider this commitment;
“No worker will face repercussions as a result of participating in the industrial action.”
