A Kano-based musician, Abdul Kamal, sought to halt the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from using his soundtrack without his consent through an application at the Federal High Court in Kano,Daily Trust reports.
However, the court declined to grant the application, asserting that it retained the discretion to permit or forbid the media outlet from utilizing the soundtrack. Consequently, the court deemed the interim order application to lack merit and instead directed for an expedited hearing of the substantive suit.
According to Daily Trust, Kamal had filed a lawsuit against the BBC Hausa Service for unauthorized use of his soundtrack in their popular program, “Daga Bakin Mai ita.” The defense counsel, Barrister Shakiruddeen Mobuluwaji, informed the court that the plaintiff’s counsel had yet to respond to the counter application.

In response, Barrister Bashir Ibrahim, representing the plaintiff, contended that he had duly served the defense counsel with the required responses within the stipulated timeframe.
Presiding over the case, Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunusa instructed both parties to confirm the receipt of responses and adjourned the proceedings to March 20, 2024.
