The Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) has called on Nigerians to regularly assess the condition of their eyes, emphasizing that doing so can significantly reduce the prevalence of blindness and eye-related ailments in the country,Daily Trust reports.
This appeal was made by Dr. Maryam Ali, the Amirah of IMAN Sister’s Forum, during a one-day outreach event commemorating the 2023 World Sight Day, themed “Love your eyes at work,” which took place on a Sunday in Jos, Plateau State.
Dr. Ali stated, “Our overall health habits are generally suboptimal, not to mention our eye health. Thus, in honor of World Sight Day, we are urging people, regardless of whether they perceive eye issues or not, to undergo eye check-ups.”

She emphasized that proactive eye check-ups are essential in preventing the risk of vision loss.
Dr. Maryam further noted that the initial target was to provide testing and treatment for medical workers, but the outreach ended up benefiting over a hundred individuals.
Dr. Fatima Umar, an ophthalmologist, who hosted the outreach at her facility, expressed the importance of offering free eye examinations, eyeglasses, and vaccines to the public. She explained, “Many individuals mistakenly believe that their vision is excellent because they can see clearly. However, eye health can only be confirmed through a thorough examination.”
