The Ondo State Police Command has said that it could not be confirmed that a 35-year-old man, Olorunfemi Tope, who was killed in a mob attack at the Ijoka Area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday was not an internet fraudster as alleged.
The driver was killed after his vehicle allegedly crushed no fewer than two persons to death on Monday morning.
An eyewitness who did not want his name in print for security reasons said Tope was driving a Toyota car when the car skidded off its lane to crush the victims who were on commercial motorcycles.
It was alleged that sympathisers who rushed to the scene to rescue the driver found some fetish items inside the vehicle, raising suspension that the driver was a ‘Yahoo boy.’
They were said to have descended on the man and beat him to death while his car was set ablaze.
While reacting, the state Police Public Relations Office, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the incident said only two persons were confirmed dead in the incident while the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, The Punch reports.
The PPRO said, “No one can confirm if the young man in question is an internet fraudster. There was an accident that led to the death of a motorcyclist, rather than people around to help, some resolved to jungle justice by killing the young man, Olorunfemi Tope, who drove the vehicle and set the car ablaze.
“But for the quick intervention of the police, his parents too would have been killed.
“In all, two people were confirmed dead while six others involved and injured in the accident are currently in the hospital.”
