Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, has once again criticized Nigeria in a public address,Daily Trust reports.

The Nigerian-born politician, who sparked controversy late last year with remarks about her country of birth, made fresh comments during her first speech of the year at an event hosted by Onward, a British think tank focused on economic and social issues.

In her speech, Badenoch expressed concerns about the UK potentially resembling Nigeria if significant reforms are not made. She emphasized the importance of building trust and asserted that the Conservative Party is best equipped to address Britain’s challenges.

“Why does this matter so much to me?” she asked. “Because I know what it’s like to have something and lose it. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.”

Reflecting on her personal experiences, Badenoch recounted growing up in Nigeria, describing how her once relatively affluent family faced increasing poverty despite their hard work, as inflation eroded their wealth.

“I grew up in a poor country and watched my family, who worked harder and harder, become poorer and poorer as their money disappeared with inflation,” she said. “I returned to the UK at 16 with my father’s last £100, seeking a better life. I’ve experienced the devastating impact of bad governance, and I am determined to prevent that from happening here.”
