The Gombe State Government has commenced the disbursement of N4.2 billion in outstanding gratuity arrears to 2,204 retirees, wikkitimes reports.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who inaugurated the exercise on Monday in Gombe, reaffirmed his commitment to clearing the backlog of gratuity payments before the end of his tenure in 2027. He revealed that his administration inherited a backlog of over N21 billion in gratuity arrears for state and local government retirees from previous administrations.
Over the past six years, the government has spent N17.2 billion to address inherited gratuity and pension liabilities. Despite these efforts, the current outstanding gratuity obligations still amount to N19 billion for state and local government retirees.
“We will use all available means to clear these obligations so that we do not leave this burden for the next administration in Gombe State,” Yahaya stated.

He emphasized that the event marked a demonstration of his administration’s resolve to leave no liabilities behind. “I am pleased to reaffirm our commitment to clearing all gratuity obligations before the end of our tenure in 2027. By doing so, we aim to leave a legacy of accountability and compassion, ensuring that no retiree is left without the benefits they deserve.”
The governor highlighted that the payment of gratuities, along with the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, reflects his administration’s dedication to the welfare and dignity of civil servants and retirees.
Yahaya urged civil servants to embrace their roles with renewed dedication and excellence. “To whom much is given, much is expected. Let us work together to restore the glory of our civil service by building an institution that is responsive, efficient, and accountable to the people of Gombe State,” he added.
