Ghana’s Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, announced on Sunday that he had conceded defeat in the weekend’s presidential election after congratulating his opponent, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory,Daily Trust reports.
Speaking to journalists at his residence, Bawumia acknowledged that Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) also secured a win in the parliamentary election.
“Our internal collation of the election results clearly indicates that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively,” Bawumia stated. “The NDC has also emerged victorious in the parliamentary election. While the final collation of a few remaining seats is pending, I am confident the outcome will remain unchanged.”
Bawumia explained that he made the decision to concede before the official announcement by Ghana’s Electoral Commission to help maintain peace and stability in the country.

“I am delivering this concession speech ahead of the official declaration to avoid escalating tensions and to safeguard the peace of our nation,” he said. “It is crucial for the global investor community to continue seeing Ghana as a beacon of peace and democracy.”
Acknowledging the people’s decision, Bawumia added: “The people have voted for change, and we accept their verdict with humility.”
