The Kano State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced a withdrawal of services from Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. This decision follows a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the NMA after a reported assault on a female doctor in the hospital’s Emergency Pediatric Unit,Daily Trust reports.

Dr. Muhammad Aminu Musa, NMA Kano’s Public Relations Officer, stated that the strike stems from the Kano State Government’s failure to take substantial action regarding the incident. An investigation by the Ministry of Health found that the doctor acted professionally and was not at fault. Nevertheless, no measures have been taken against the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who allegedly led the assault and harassed the doctor while she was on duty.

As a result, the NMA Kano is suspending all medical services at the hospital indefinitely, starting at 12 noon on November 6, 2024. Dr. Musa emphasized that the strike will continue until the government dismisses the Commissioner, enhances staffing levels, and improves security measures in the facility.

“The government must meet minimum staffing standards to protect the health and safety of doctors and patients alike. Additionally, comprehensive security must be maintained in all hospital units to safeguard healthcare workers and patients,” he said.

Dr. Musa reaffirmed the NMA’s dedication to quality medical care and patient safety, explaining that this action is intended to highlight the urgency for justice and necessary reforms to protect healthcare professionals.

“We urge the government to take swift and decisive action to restore trust in Kano State’s healthcare system and ensure a safe environment for all medical personnel,” he concluded.
