At least 80 percent of the animals at the popular Sanda Kyari Zoo in Maiduguri have been confirmed dead, and significant property damage has occurred following the Monday night floods caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam in Konduga local government area of Borno State,leadership reports.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Zoo’s General Manager, Ali Abatcha, warned that dangerous animals such as crocodiles and snakes had been swept into nearby communities, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
“During this devastating flood disaster, the General Manager wishes to alert the public that some deadly animals, including crocodiles and snakes, have been washed into the surrounding communities. We call on residents to be vigilant and take all necessary safety measures to avoid these animals,” the statement read.

Abatcha also expressed concern for the remaining animals and reassured the public of efforts to ensure the safety and protection of those under his care.
Meanwhile, the University of Maiduguri and Borno State University have temporarily shut down due to the floods that have severely affected Maiduguri, forcing many residents to flee their homes. Acting Senior Assistant Registrar II of BOSU, Fatima Muhammad Audu, confirmed the closure, citing compliance with a directive from the Borno State Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation. The university will remain closed from Tuesday, September 10, to Monday, September 16, 2024.
“All staff and students are advised to stay safe during this period. Management prays for the strength and resilience of those affected by the flood. May Allah grant them comfort,” the statement added.
Similarly, the University of Maiduguri has suspended lectures and closed its offices until the flooding subsides. The university’s Registrar, Ahmed Lawan, said in a statement, “In view of the ongoing flood disaster, the University Management is suspending all lectures and temporarily closing offices with immediate effect to safeguard staff and students.”
The Borno State government has also ordered a statewide closure of all schools, both public and private, until Monday, September 23, 2024. This directive was issued by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, with officials urging strict compliance from all institutions.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding during this challenging time,” the statement concluded.
