The Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has announced that Awana Alhaji Mele Keremi, a high-ranking Boko Haram Deputy Commander, along with nine others, has surrendered in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State,Daily Trust reports.
This information was shared in a statement issued by the MNJTF’s Chief Military Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, in N’djamena, Chad, and disseminated to news outlets in Maiduguri on Monday.
The statement highlighted that the surrender of such a high-ranking Boko Haram figure, along with the successful disposal of explosive devices, marks significant progress in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region.

“In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad region, a high-ranking Boko Haram Deputy Commander, identified as Awana Alhaji Mele Keremi, has surrendered to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Cross Kauwa.
Keremi, who was a close associate of a notorious Boko Haram commander, confessed to his involvement in numerous terrorist operations along the Monguno-Baga axis, providing valuable intelligence to the authorities,” the statement read.
In a related development, MNJTF troops also welcomed Babagoni Modu and a family of eight who managed to escape from a Boko Haram camp in Marte.
“Modu, a former member of the terrorist group, explained that his disillusionment with their violent activities led him to escape.
The family, consisting of two women, four men, and two children, shared the harrowing experiences they endured at the hands of the terrorists before their daring escape.”
The statement concluded by emphasizing the MNJTF’s dedication to combating terrorism and securing the Lake Chad region.
