A woman who caused a scene at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Saturday by tearing her husband’s passport has stated that she had her reasons for doing so,Daily Trust reports.

The couple, along with their three children, arrived from a European country over the weekend, sparking a viral social media drama. Although the couple’s identities have not been revealed, they are believed to be from Edo State.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced that it is investigating the incident and has invited the woman for questioning.

In an interview with @JejojaFamily TV, the woman explained that her actions were the result of longstanding issues with her husband. She shared that she had initially considered tearing the passport while they were still in Europe but decided against it to avoid causing her husband unnecessary stress.

“These issues have been ongoing for a very long time,” she said. “I decided to wait until I returned to Nigeria to take action. It wasn’t a spontaneous decision; I knew what I was doing.”

She urged those criticizing her to consider the circumstances that led to her actions, emphasizing that she is not someone who would act irrationally without reason.

“I am not a mad woman who would just act out like that. There’s a reason behind what I did. I have been through a lot. I see so many comments, and people who haven’t contacted me in years are suddenly calling. But I am not like that.

“Imagine if I had done this in Europe, where we were coming from. I didn’t want my husband to go through a lot of stress, which is why I waited until we were in Nigeria.

“I don’t care about what people are writing. If you don’t know the full story, don’t rush to judge. Many people at the airport saw me and understood that something deeper was going on.

“Do you think I would tear his passport just like that? No. I have endured a lot—constant family issues. My husband cannot speak up. It took me a long time to get access to my own social media accounts because he was the one controlling everything. I had to go through a lot to even get the passport.

“I suffered alongside my husband for years, and now it seems like all my efforts are being dismissed. Men might not understand, but those who have sisters going through what I’m experiencing will get it.

“To those saying I should be arrested, come and hold me responsible. I know the pain I’m going through. I cry every day, after having three kids, and now someone wants to send me away from everything I know. I just want to reap the benefits of what I’ve sown with him. If my husband has the courage, let him come out and tell the full story.”
