Dangote to begin coal exports, projects $7m daily revenue from fertiliser sale

Dangote Industries to Begin Coal Exports, Eyes $7 Million Daily Fertiliser Revenue

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has announced that the company will soon commence coal exports from Nigeria as part of its broader strategy to significantly scale up its export operations. Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) headquarters in Lagos on Monday, Dangote outlined ambitious plans that could see the company become Nigeria’s top earner of foreign exchange,TheCable reports.

“We’re already exporting cement from our six-million-ton capacity plant in Itori,” he said. “In the next few weeks, we’ll begin exporting coal. Our fertiliser exports will soon reach eight cargoes, and our refinery will ship no less than 25 million tons of various petroleum products.”

In addition, DIL is set to export between 600,000 and 700,000 metric tons of polypropylene. Over the next two years, the company aims to export around 16,000 tons of fertiliser daily, which Dangote estimates could generate between $6.5 million and $7 million in daily revenue.

“With this export program, DIL will become a major driver of foreign exchange earnings in Nigeria,” he said. “This will have a direct impact on port activities, which we expect to double within the next one to two years.”

Dangote also praised the NPA, noting that DIL is currently its largest customer. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the private sector and port authorities for the advancement of the marine and blue economy sectors.

“Our operations in Lekki alone will involve around 240 crude oil tankers annually, each carrying one million barrels. Combined with the export of refined products, this will result in over 600 vessel movements per year,” he said.

Regarding fertiliser exports, he added that nearly eight vessels will be involved in those operations alone. Dangote stressed the critical role of the NPA in supporting these logistics, calling on the federal government to bolster the agency with additional equipment, such as tugboats.

“Our operations depend heavily on the NPA’s efficiency. Without the right support, our logistics chain could face serious bottlenecks,” he warned. “We’ll be advocating for the NPA to receive the resources it needs from the federal government.”

Dangote Commends Naira-for-Crude Policy

Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director and CEO of the NPA, said Dangote’s visit was in part to commend the federal government’s naira-for-crude exchange policy, which began in October 2024.

“He’s here to express his appreciation for the gains we’ve made under the naira-for-crude policy, which has greatly improved transaction efficiency with government agencies,” Dantsoho said.

He added that the NPA has been handling an average of 57 vessels per month, surpassing the 600-vessel annual volume Dangote had initially projected.

Dantsoho also highlighted progress in digital transformation at Nigeria’s ports. “We’re pleased with the government’s approval of the National Single Window initiative, and we’re now 95% ready to roll out the Port Community System,” he said.

On expanding port capacity, he noted that this could be achieved either through upgrading existing ports (brownfield development) or constructing entirely new ones (greenfield development).

With Dangote’s expansive export strategy and increasing port traffic, the collaboration between DIL and the NPA is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s trade, infrastructure, and economic outlook.

AfDB Kicks Off Annual Meeting, To Pick New Head On Thursday

The African Development Bank (AfDB) began its annual meetings on Monday, a high-stakes gathering in Abidjan that will culminate in the election of a new president. This year’s event comes at a critical juncture, as the continent’s largest multilateral financial institution faces significant funding challenges—most notably a proposed $555 million cut in U.S. contributions to the AfDB and its concessional arm, the African Development Fund (ADF), which supports low-income countries, leadership reports.

The meetings bring together heads of state, finance ministers, and key economic stakeholders from across the continent. Five candidates are competing to succeed outgoing President Akinwumi Adesina, whose second and final five-year term ends in September. The contenders include:

  • Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala (South Africa)
  • Amadou Hott (Senegal)
  • Samuel Munzele Maimbo (Zambia)
  • Sidi Ould Tah (Mauritania)
  • Abbas Mahamat Tolli (Chad)

Each candidate brings substantial experience in finance and development, along with bold visions for Africa’s economic future.

The leadership transition comes as many African countries grapple with mounting debt and are actively seeking alternative sources of development financing. With a capital base of $318 billion, the AfDB is jointly owned by 54 African nations and major global economies, including the United States, Japan, and the institution’s largest shareholder, Nigeria.

Attention is also turning to the upcoming replenishment round for the African Development Fund, set for November. The bank is aiming to raise $25 billion—nearly triple the $8.9 billion secured in the previous cycle.

According to experts, the incoming president will face tough choices: lobbying the U.S. to restore funding, courting non-regional partners such as China or Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the UAE (potentially offering greater influence in return), or urging African countries to increase their own financial commitments.

At a press briefing on Monday, Adesina outlined the AfDB’s strategic goals for the next decade: expanding electricity access, boosting agricultural productivity, supporting industrial development, deepening regional integration, and raising living standards across the continent.

To be elected, a candidate must first secure at least 50.01% of the vote from African member countries. A second round of voting that includes all 81 member states—both regional and non-regional—will determine the final outcome. The new president is expected to be announced on Thursday.

FCTA Seals PDP Secretariat Ahead of NEC Meeting Amid Internal Crisis

Less than 24 hours before the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) highly anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday sealed the party’s national secretariat in Abuja,Daily Trust reports.

The action follows escalating internal tensions within the PDP, with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike—a key player in the crisis—at the center of the storm. The move came just a day after Wike pulled out of peace talks, refusing to support the NEC meeting unless Senator Samuel Anyanwu is recognized as the party’s national secretary.

Wike had previously threatened to revoke over 4,700 land titles due to non-payment of ground rent. Among the affected properties was the PDP’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, and its permanent secretariat still under construction in the Central Business District.

At approximately 2:06 p.m. on Monday, FCTA officials led by Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the FCT Minister, and Chijioke Nwankwoeze, Director of Land Administration, arrived at Wadata Plaza and locked the main entrance.

Nwankwoeze explained that the action was part of an ongoing enforcement operation targeting properties owing ground rent for up to 43 years. He said notices had been duly served to all affected owners, including Senator Samaila Mamman Kofi, the original titleholder of the secretariat.

Olayinka dismissed claims of political motivation, saying similar actions had been taken against banks, hotels, and even federal agencies.

PDP Reacts: “An Attempt to Silence the Opposition”

PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum condemned the move as an attempt by the APC-led federal government to stifle opposition and disrupt democratic processes. Speaking after a caucus meeting, Damagum declared that the party would not be intimidated.

“This is the height of irresponsibility,” he said. “We are ready to face arrest if necessary, but we will not back down.”

He announced that the caucus meeting would resume Tuesday morning and that a committee had been formed to report on the situation.

Sources within the party said consultations were ongoing to ensure the NEC meeting complies with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regulations to avoid potential legal challenges. The key concern is whether INEC will recognize documents signed by party officials whose legitimacy is in dispute.

Power Struggle and Deepening Crisis

At the heart of the crisis is a struggle for control of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. While Wike is seen as aligning the party with President Bola Tinubu’s re-election agenda, several PDP governors, including Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), are resisting such influence.

Monday’s caucus meeting reportedly ended in a deadlock, with no agreement on key leadership issues. Attendees included members of the National Working Committee (NWC), the PDP Governors’ Forum, and the Board of Trustees (BoT).

Tinubu Intervenes: 14-Day Grace Period for Defaulters

Amid mounting public criticism, the FCTA later announced a 14-day grace period for defaulters to settle their debts. A statement signed by Nwankwoeze indicated that property owners in various districts must pay penalties ranging from N2 million to N5 million in addition to outstanding ground rent.

The directive, reportedly issued by President Tinubu, also urges owners to regularize property documentation within the two-week window.

Analysts Divided Over Motives

Political analyst Dr. Abubakar Kari said the action, while legally defensible, is politically suspect due to its timing and the target involved.

“Regardless of the legality, the fact that it’s the PDP headquarters raises red flags,” he noted, adding that many Nigerians will view the seal-off as a calculated attempt to destabilize the opposition.

Kari argued that the PDP should not allow the move to derail its activities. “If they’re serious, they can convene meetings elsewhere. The party’s right to assembly is constitutionally protected,” he said.

Conversely, analyst Jide Ojo faulted the PDP for neglecting its financial obligations, calling the situation an avoidable embarrassment. He pointed out that other entities also faced similar enforcement actions, and the PDP had ample time to pay up.

Allegations of Political Sabotage

PDP chieftain Mallam Umar Sani alleged that the party had attempted to settle the rent but was blocked by Wike.

“The total amount owed is minimal. Wike reportedly instructed that the money should not be accepted,” Sani claimed. “This was a calculated move to halt the NEC meeting.”

He said Wike’s real motive is to prevent NEC from endorsing leadership decisions he opposes, particularly the rejection of Senator Anyanwu as national secretary.

To disguise the political nature of the move, Sani alleged, Wike expanded the operation to include other institutions. “But among 19 political parties with offices in Abuja, only the PDP secretariat was targeted,” he said.

“A Shameful Betrayal” – PDP Leaders Speak Out

NEC member Timothy Osadolor described the seal-off as “a shameful act” by someone who had benefited immensely from the PDP.

“This is a man the party raised—from local government chairman to governor to minister. Now he’s humiliating the same party,” Osadolor said.

He insisted the action was politically driven and that the party would challenge it in court.

“It’s not the building they’re fighting—it’s the will of Nigerians. You can demolish a building, but not the resolve of the people,” he added.

Ganduje: PDP members joining APC because their party is gasping for breath

One-Party State: We didn’t force anyone to join APC – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed concerns that his administration is steering Nigeria toward a one-party system, arguing that individuals have the right to choose their political affiliations,Daily Trust reports.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu remarked, “It is only one party that is ruling.” He added that the APC is currently driving the aspirations of the nation.

Addressing those considering leaving other parties, the President said, “The country belongs to all of us—hold on to it. For those talking about a one-party system, it’s one party that is leading. You can’t blame people for leaving a sinking ship when there are no life jackets.”

Urging party members to remain committed, Tinubu concluded, “We have a chance to make Africa great. For those I cannot appoint to political positions right now, be patient—you’ll be proud to be part of this party.”

Borno State Governor Accuses Military Officers, Politicians of Aiding Boko Haram

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has alleged that some military officers, politicians, and community members are acting as informants and collaborators for Boko Haram terrorists,Daily Trust reports.

In an interview on News Central’s Breakfast Central, Zulum pledged to take decisive action against those undermining his administration’s efforts to combat insurgency in the state.

“We have informants and collaborators within the Nigerian Armed Forces, among politicians, and within our communities,” the governor said. “Our response will be to significantly strengthen our intelligence network and deal with these saboteurs ruthlessly.”

Zulum emphasized that defeating terrorism requires more than military force alone. “We must go beyond kinetic solutions. Socio-political and economic strategies—what I call non-kinetic measures—are essential in addressing the root causes of insurgency,” he explained.

He also expressed concerns about individuals among the over 300,000 former insurgents who have surrendered, warning that some may relapse. “It’s possible a few may return to the bush. Insurgency cannot be defeated by corrective measures alone,” he noted.

The governor criticized the Nigerian military’s lack of adequate equipment, pointing out that insurgents often possess superior technology. “The army doesn’t have the necessary tools on the ground to effectively counter the insurgents,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Zulum commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for supporting peace-building initiatives in the region. “I appreciate the military’s contribution to our non-kinetic efforts,” he said.

He also urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize grassroots intelligence and professional military advice in addressing the insurgency. “We must avoid politicizing insecurity. The President needs to listen to those who understand the realities on the ground and can offer sound advice,” Zulum stated.

He concluded by announcing plans to immediately deploy a forest guard to further bolster security efforts.
