Suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an ambush on Governor Mai Mala Buni’s security escorts in Yobe state, resulting in the death of one policeman and injuries to six others. The incident occurred along the Jakana-Mainok expressway in Borno State while the security team was returning from escorting the governor to Maiduguri for the University of Maiduguri’s 24th Convocation ceremony. Vice-President Kashim Shettima was honored with a doctorate degree during the event,Daily Trust reports.

Governor Buni stayed in Maiduguri, and the attack took place during the security team’s return to Yobe. The governor’s spokesman, Mamman Mohammed, confirmed the ambush, stating that the security personnel engaged in a firefight with the attackers.

Three policemen sustained injuries but were reportedly responding to treatment. According to a source from the convoy, the troops leading the convoy retaliated with heavy fire, causing the terrorists to retreat. Unfortunately, one police officer lost his life, and two soldiers, a driver, three policemen, and a DSS agent were wounded.

The wounded individuals were evacuated to an undisclosed hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition. As of the press time, the casualty figure on the terrorists’ side was not confirmed.
