The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has raised the alarm that human traffickers have adopted the method of carrying out family planning implants on their female victims in order to have full exploitation of their victims,Dailytrust report.

The NAPTIP Edo State Commander, Bar. Nduka Nwanwenne disclosed this at the weekend in an interview with journalists shortly after the free medical outreach organised by the agency in collaboration with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) funded by the kingdom of Netherlands.

Nwanwenne noted that most victims of human trafficking always come back with health issues due to the high exploitation of the victims by their traffickers.

“There was a victim who came from Mali recently, and I discovered something that I have never seen before in my dealing with trafficked victims, she had an implant of family planning in her body,” the NAPTIP boss said.

He said the rescued victim did the implant in Mali while working for her sponsors who are out to recoup double what they claimed to have spent on transporting the victims to their locations

“The implant was to prevent pregnancy, and unwanted pregnancy is one of the consequences of human trafficking, the pregnancy is a hindrance to exploitation, so the traffickers will go to any length to ensure that their victims don’t get pregnant,” he said.

Nwanwenne said the traffickers believe that the only way they get the full benefit of the exploitation of their victims is to prevent unwanted pregnancy because pregnancy always renders the service of exploitation unprofitable.

He commended the agency Director-General Dr Fatimah Wazir-Azi for approving the supply of all the necessary drugs for the treatment of victims.
