Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has given the state’s Ministry of Water Resources February deadline to complete the Azare Water Supply project.

Completion of the project will serve eight communities, including Hizhi, Fumwa, Bwala and Milala in Hawul Local Council of the state.

Zulum gave the directive after assessing the progress of work on the project sited at Azare in Borno South.

The governor, who is also an engineer, disclosed: “The water project has 10 middle aquifer boreholes, with each pumping 10 litres of potable water a minute to overcome the challenge of water scarcity in the eight hilly communities.

“This is a challenge we had to overcome before accessing potable water for our people living in the areas.”

He added that the overhead tank would store about 560,000 litres of water.

According to him, the distribution of potable water will reach no less than 200.000 Azare households, including other communities in the Council area.

Other facilities of water project included 560,000-litre tank with 400,000-litre surface and 160,000-litre overhead of potable water to the people.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Tijani Alkali, disclosed that the completion of the project would include the reticulation of three kilometres of primary and secondary distribution networks with various water points in the eight communities.

He said that six boreholes had already been drilled, and four others to be completed to meet the governor’s deadline of February 2023.

To ensure uninterrupted water supply, he said: “The Azare water project will be powered by a hybrid of 24,000 watts of solar energy and 100 KVA generating set.”

The governor also approved five additional boreholes with high-yielding capacity as water sources to other towns in communities that might not access the water from the Azare water project.

He ordered Alkali to commence sinking and rehabilitation of five additional boreholes to bring the total number of water pumps to 40 in the areas.
